Wu San Gui, a general of the collapsing Ming dynasty, chose to side with the Manchus when he heard the news of the fall of Beijing to Li Zi Cheng and helped the Manchus defeat opposing forces. In recognition of the importance of his contribution, the Qing Emperor Shunzi appointed him Lord of the Pacified West, residing in Yunan province in the west, the most powerful out of the 3 tributories created to reward important former Ming generals. By the time Qing emperor Kangxi was firmly in power, the central dynastic administration decided to curb the increasing power of the 3 tributories.
